Pharmacology:
Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam family. It acts by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis, thereby exerting antiinflammatory, anti-exudative, analgesic and antipyretic properties. Meloxicam has anti-endotoxic properties too.
Dosage & administration:
Route of administration: For oral administration only.
Cattle: 1 bolus/100 kg body weight (1 mg/kg) orally single dose.
Dog: 0.2 mg/kg body weight orally single dose for 1 day followed by 0.1 mg/kg from 2nd day.
Pig: After subcutaneous injection 0.1 mg/kg orally daily for 2 weeks.
Or as directed by the Veterinary Physician.
Contraindications:
ï‚· Animals less than six weeks old.
ï‚· Animals hypersensitive to meloxicam.
ï‚· Contraindicated in animals with impaired renal, hepatic or cardiac function.
Precaution:
Do not administer concurrently with steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (SAID) & other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID).
Side effects:
A slight transient swelling at the injection site following SC injection may be seen. Prolong use may cause gastrointestinal lesions, inappetence, vomiting & diarrhea.
Use in pregnancy & lactation:
May be used in pregnant & lactating animals. However, risk & necessity should be considered during administration of medicine in pregnant & lactating animals.
Drug interactions:
May cause increased likelihood of bleeding if use in conjunction with corticosteroids, heparin, warfarin, aspirin, flunixin & phenylbutazone.
With food and others: No interaction was found.
Overdose:
In the event of an overdose symptomatic treatment should be initiated.
Withdrawal period:
Cattle: Meat-15 days, Milk-5 days
Pig: Meat-5 days.
