Description:
Albendazole is a benzimidazole anthelmintic. It is an effective broad spectrum anthelmintic.
Mode of action:
Albendazole binds to the B-tubulin inhibiting their polymerization into microtubules. The decrease in microtubules in the intestinal cells of the parasites decreases their absorptive function, especially the uptake of glucose by the larval and adult forms of the parasites. Insufficient glucose results in insufficient energy for the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in parasites and the parasite eventually dies.
